About “IZUMI”
Izumi is the old name the Kizu River.
In ancient times the area along the river thrived as a key point
connecting the cities of Kyoto and Osaka and became known for the fine textiles produced there.
As our wallpapers are made with techniques traditionally used to weave those textiles,
and our desire is to share these wallpapers from Kyoto with Japan and the larger world
so that new lifestyles may emerge from them,
we chose the name “Izumi”.

From spinning and dying of yarns to finished products
Textile design requires an intimate knowledge of the production process.
One must take advantage of the natural characteristics of the materials,
calculate how the use of colors and overlapping will affect the finish,
and go through a process of trial and error to finally arrive at beauty hitherto unseen.
In an age where processes in the textile industry are divided among many specialized producers,
we created Izumi in one of the few mills in the world where everything is done in one spot―from the spinning of thread and weaving all the way to the finished product.
We will continue to work hard to bring you wallpapers of the finest quality,
with inimitably sublime tones and textures ― wallpapers that are steeped in the past but embrace the future.
Peculiarity
Yarn
Materials constitute the most important element of textiles. Carefully selecting materials of the highest quality, and subjecting them to only the bare minimum of processing so that the inherent qualities of the materials are not diminished…therein lies the essence of Japanese culture.
Heart
The best elements of a culture arise from the abundant interplay between people and nature. The rich climate of the Kizu River and the rich heritage of textiles developed and refined over many centuries to suit people’ s needs and lifestyles … these things are still being passed down from generation to generation.
Design
Textile design begins as a dialogue with the materials. One must have an intimate knowledge of the characteristics of each material used and be able to combine various techniques to bring out their inherent charm. In this way, we do not make designs, but rather engender them.
Traditional
The history of Japanese textiles goes back to the making of mosquito nets. Our ideal is to be successors to techniques that have always been around but at the same time explore new possibilities for interiors. True traditions never fail to evolve.
